    Arabic Studies
Arabic language and culture instruction is provided for all elementary grade students. Students learn basic conversational patterns in Arabic that can be applied in everyday situations. Students also learn about the culture and customs of our host country by experiencing music, food, games, art and literature. Plans to expand our Arabic language opportunities for students are underway this year.

    Health Services
Two fully qualified, registered nurses are on duty to attend to students should they become sick or injured at school. Nurses can administer prescribed medication based upon parent approval and written instructions. Nurses also coordinate required health screening and participate in health education.

    Guidance Counseling
The counseling program is designed to offer services to promote the personal, social and educational development of students. Counselors at each division work closely with students, parents and teachers to create a successful school experience for DAA students. The counseling program is both proactive and reactive in scope. It seeks to prevent problems by addressing the developmental needs of al students, while also intervening with students experiencing specific difficulties.

    Music

DAA believes that music plays a major role in society as a means of self-expression and cultural enrichment. Knowing and practicing the art of music is vital to the lifelong development of a child's mind and spirit. Dubai American Academy’s music program includes creating music through rhythm, listening to and analyzing music, understanding music in relation to history and culture, learning to read music notation, the care and use of a variety of instruments, and the participation in performances in band, orchestra or choir.

    Art
All students in kindergarten through grade 5 receive regular instruction in art. Students learn by creating art (studio/production), responding to and making judgments about art (criticism), acquiring historical and cultural knowledge about artists and their works (history), and understanding how people justify judgments about art objects (aesthetics). After grade 5, students may continue to pursue their interest in art through elective classes. Middle and High school art offers the traditional visual arts but adds aspects of commercial art and design. It covers drawing, painting, clay, watercolor, acrylic, airbrush, printmaking, sculpture and art appreciation.

    Drama
The Elementary program incorporates drama skills into their everyday class activities and presentations. In the Middle and High schools, drama is offered as an elective. The Drama program covers many topics including the history of theater, the principles of stage direction, voice and movement techniques, scene design, dramatic criticism, pantomime and melodrama.

Exemplary theater productions are presented annually by all division level schools. A school-wide goal is to host events that permit all students the opportunity to perform on stage!

    Languages

    World Languages
In international education, long-term language learning plays a key role in preparing students for a world in which international, multilingual, multi-cultural connections will be ever present.

Our method of instruction helps students learn at different rates and in different styles. French is incorporated as part of the core curriculum beginning in grade 5. Middle and High schools offer elective programs in French and Spanish.

Plans are underway to provide Arabic language to the middle and high school students.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
At Dubai American Academy the language of instruction is English. A minimum level of English language proficiency is required for enrollment. Beginning in grade 1 supplementary ESL instruction is provided for those students requiring assistance with the English language. In addition to their scheduled ESL classes, students are required to follow a regular English language instruction schedule. A limit is placed on the number of ESL students per classroom. In order for ESL students to fully benefit from this program, parents are encouraged to support the English spoken in the home. There is no ESL program for high school students.
